Celebrating Malden's Birthday, April 22, 2003

There was a great turnout Tuesday, April 22, at a gathering celebrating Malden's quasquicentennial. Chamber Director Bill Hampton greeted and audience and introduced various speakers including Mayor Mary Lou Bearden, local amateur historian Ron Phelps who gave a history of the founding of our fair city, newspaper publisher Allen Black, and Joe Mosley who was a young Boy Scout when the Statue of Liberty was installed. Entertainment was provided by members of the Malden High School Choir and Mrs. Shelton's elementary class. A group picture was taken by photographer David Black of those in attendance releasing 125 red, white and blue balloons. This photo will be included in a time capsule that will be buried at the Statue of Liberty during celebration activities this summer. The celebration concluded with everyone enjoying cake and sodas in the 4-6 Elementary School Gym.
